For 15 years the newly independent African countries round white-ruled South Africa joined together as the ‘Frontline States’ to fight apartheid. South Africa inflicted endless brutality to weaken them. Hundreds of thousands were killed and millions displaced as refugees, but ultimately their resistance won. South Africa was free, but the shocking story was never told. Many migrants from the Frontline States were fatally attacked when they came looking for work in South Africa. The exhibition was commissioned by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in South Africa to show South Africans that those they attacked had in fact helped them gain their freedom.
